Council considers sewage system
Plans for a drip irrigation system were unveiled at last week's council meeting. It would enable bathrooms to be built at the park.
The system cleans and filters sewage into the ground. It is currently used at other local parks including Hempfield Skate Park.
Zoning officer David Jobe said the system could cost about $160,000. That includes permits, design work and construction.
Councilman Theo van de Venne said he worries that more people could use the park on an average day, especially during the summer, when sports teams will use the fields on a regular basis. He also worried about Jobe's estimate.
"I do believe we have to be careful about the costs," he said.
The cost Jobe presented was made based on what it would cost for public works to perform the work. He said those numbers could change if the project is contracted to a different company.
Council President Nancy Kacin said the system was cheaper than the alternative, a gravity flow sewer system.
That system would require the municipality to get permission from landowners to connect an existing system to the park.
