Rob Hunter picked the right community in which to advance his career.

"I grew up on a farm. I love the rural area," he said.

He'll be surrounded by quite a bit of rural land each workday. Hunter was named Murrysville recreation director at last week's council meeting.

He officially began work on Monday. He will be paid $46,000 a year. Hunter had been youth activities director for Penn Hills since 2005. When the opportunity to advance his career came, he jumped at the chance.

"It's a promotion for me," Hunter said.

While at Penn Hills, Hunter also helped with programs for seniors and was involved in the municipality's holiday celebration.

The first goal for Hunter is to become familiar with the programs that are offered. He wants to make sure that everyone young and old has something for them.

"I believe there should be recreation programs for every kid and every age group," Hunter said.

Outgoing recreation director Michele Clarke was pleased with the choice.

"I think he's going to do an excellent job," she said. "He's willing to be involved with the community."

Before taking a position with Penn Hills, Hunter interned with the athletic department of Riverview High School. He also worked on the school's baseball and football coaching staffs.

Among the programs Hunter has in mind for Murrysville are fire safety activities for young children and activities to introduce the police department to children.

Councilwoman Joan Kearns, who represented council during the interview process, said she was impressed with Hunter's energy and enthusiasm. She expects him to keep residents busy with activities.

"Watch out, Murrysville," she said.

The municipal charter does not require him to move to Murrysville. Hunter said he plans to keep his home in Penn Hills, but he said the appeal of the Franklin Regional School District could make a move easier if he decides to relocate.

While Hunter said his first goal is to learn about his new environment, he's excited about the possibilities that exist in the community.

"I'm familiar with Murrysville," he said. "It has a good reputation."
