May 3 conservation event set for zoo

The Murrysville-based Westmoreland Conservancy will help 80 regional conservation groups share ideas next month.

The group is organizing Conservation Connection, which will take place at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on May 3.

The group will address conservation issues involving land, water and wildlife. There also will be a presentation on local groups' work and the region's natural beauty.

"A number of the conservancy groups (that) responded favorably are interested in being a part of the event," says Betsy Aiken, the vice president of the Westmoreland Conservancy.

The event features a picnic buffet under the garden tent, behind-the scenes tours, featured speakers, zoo animal appearances, children's activities, face painting, a magician and an activity room.

Other activities include a slideshow, a silent auction to benefit area conservation efforts and a cash bar.

"Five hundred people will be seated under the garden tent and another 125 in a large room in the education center," says Aiken.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $8 for children ages 3 to 12. Tickets are by advance sale only and are available through this Saturday.
