Officials expect paving list to be up in air until next month
Freeport Street in Delmont will provide a smoother ride for motorists after this summer. What other roads are repaired remain up in the air.
At Tuesday's council meeting, Delmont officials finalized a $500,000 loan for road repairs in the borough. The loan will come from S&T Bank.
Borough engineer Kevin Brett said bids for the roadwork will be sought next week. It will include two sections of Freeport Street.
Brett said the contract includes options for 13 other roads in the borough, including the rest of Freeport Street. While some roads might be in more need of repair than others, the cost to pave those roads could be be prohibitive this year, Brett said.
"They might come in significantly higher," Brett said. "You might be able to get more bang for your buck (by having several less-damaged roads paved)."
One project that has no chance of being completed this year is the bridge along Christy Road.
Officials had considered trying to replace it but the cost and the borough's neighbors in Salem Township stopped those plans.
A construction project on Rock Springs Road in Salem Township has forced many motorists to use the bridge as a detour.
Councilwoman Cher Anderson said she would have appreciated more notice from Salem officials about their plans.
"We had been talking about doing our little bridge, and then, they turn around and do this," Anderson said.
Bid proposals will be opened at the June 10 council meeting. Delmont officials could award the contract at a special meeting later that month.
Brett said he expects a good amount of interest from contractors.
"Right now, most the paving contractors are looking for work," he said.
