Postal retail office eyed in Export
Export could eventually have a post office back in the borough, but it won't be at its old site.
Richard Hancock, a real estate specialist with the postal service, will speak at a public meeting on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the American Legion building on Kennedy Avenue.
Hancock said the postal service is considering opening a retail office in the borough. The public meeting is the first step in determining what the residents in the borough need.
Even if an office opens again in the borough, it is likely that delivery will continue from Murrysville.
"The mail that comes in will probably still operate out of the Murrysville facility. We're not sure yet," Campagna said.
Campagna said a letter that was sent to the borough from the postal service states that the office's former location on Kennedy Avenue was not an adequate site.
The letter that Hancock sent stated that the postal service would try to find a site close to the location on Kennedy Avenue but would not guarantee it, Campagna said.
Public input at next week's meeting will be crucial in getting a post office back in the borough, Campagna said.
"It doesn't have to be from Export," he said. "It can be from people who this facility regularly from other areas."
Campagna said the more people who attend the meeting to in support of the post office, the more likely it will be that one will open.
The post office in Export closed last week after its lease was terminated. Mail service is currently being handled by the Murrysville post office.
Though there is the possibility of an office returning to the borough, Campagna said Hancock indicated to him that it was not a done deal just yet.
"He's not going to paint a complete positive picture at this time but he's interested," Campagna said.
