School board approves budget, raises taxes by 0.5 mills
Property taxes for residents of the Franklin Regional School District are going up.
The school board unanimously approved a 2008-09 budget that calls for a half-mill tax increase Monday night. The budget is $44.5 million.
For the average homeowner, the change will result in a $16 a year tax increase. The average property value assessment in the district is $32,750.
The board also approved the technology budget for $852,150 and athletic budget for $849,122.
Board member Lynn Gurrentz said she wanted the district to be careful with adding sports to the athletic program. The boy's lacrosse program is included in this year's budget for the first time at $31,010.
"I just hope we're going to be very careful and diligent with the precedent we set with this," she said.
Board member Roberta Cook said she would like to see elimination of two per-capita taxes that each cost $5.
The taxes are charged to adults. Income from one goes entirely to the school district, money from the other is split between the municipality and the district.

I am going to be new to the area. I was wondering. Can the taxes be raised without the public voting for it? Do the homeowners not have a voice in allowing taxes to be raised? Also, isn't this fairly biased, those who only rent are not subjected to the same taxes? Do not the renters go to the same schools as the homeowners?
Curiously wanting to know?
Bill
Why would renters pay the same taxes? They don't own the building or the land the building is on. The person or organization that actually owns the apartment complex or house and the land are the ones that pay the taxes, normally from the income they receive from the renters. And I have never heard of the public being able to vote on whether taxes should be raised or not. Do you vote yes or no on whether the federal government raises taxes? No, and neither do you locally.
