Sports shorts: Simply the Best soccer camps coming up
Penn-Trafford boys soccer coach Derek Cuthbert will host sessions of the annual Simply the Best Soccer Camp this summer.
All camps are for both boys and girls and will be held at the Bushy Run Soccer Complex at a cost of $85. Camps begin at 9 a.m. and run to noon.
A session for players ages 9 to 12 will be Monday to July 17, and another session for the same age group will be held Aug. 4 to 7.
Cuthbert also will hold a camp for players entering grades seven and eight from Aug. 11 to 14.
Assisting Cuthbert in the camp instruction will be former P-T player Andy Loughnane and incoming senior goalkeeper Kevin Marker.

Golf results
Several local golfers competed in the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Open Championship on June 30 and July 1.
Shane Miller, an amateur from Harrison City, shot 6 over par to finish in a tie for 38th. Fellow Harrison City native Dave Antill was 56th with a score of 11 over.
Also competing but failing to make the cut after the first round were Murrysville's Josh Vasilko, Export's Robert Gordon, Irwin's Douglas Mehall, Jason Marciniec and Alex Angelone and Don Dubyak from North Huntingdon.
Nathan Smith from Pittsburgh won the two-round event with a score of 5-under-par 135.
Men's softball
Below are week one results from the Gateway East Church Softball League.
• Week one of the Gateway East Church Softball League featured a 3-0 start for St. Barbara Gold with victories over IC-1 (6-5), St. Bernadette Green (9-3) and Christian Fellowship (10-1).
Brian Mack, Dave Mack, Marko Thomas and Todd Lars homered for St. Barbara.
• In other action, St. Bernadette Black defeated St. Bernadette Green, and Murrysville Alliance beat New Life Presbyterian (20-15).
• St. Barbara Green and New Life beat St. Bernadette Green (4-2) with Rob Dlubak homering for New Life.
Free clinics
The Allegheny County Parks Department will offer its annual traveling sports clinics Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., through Aug. 1 1.

Inline hockey
Norwin Inline Hockey Club will hold evaluations for the upcoming season this month at Hot Shots Indoor Sports Arena.
All new players are required to attend at least one session. Any player who has played in past seasons strongly is encouraged to attend at least one session. Players are welcomed and encouraged to attend both sessions if possible. Players attending a second session will be charged $5. Cost is $10 per player.
The NIHC will use these evaluations to help form rosters for the 2008-09 season. Rosters should be completed by July 31.
The first session will be held on July 17, and the second will be on July 28. Elementary players in grades two to five will meet from 6:30 to 7:25 p.m. Middle school players will go from 7:30 to 8:25 p.m., and junior varsity and varsity players will be evaluated from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
There also will be a goalie workout and evaluation on July 28, from 6 to 8 p.m.
All goaltenders are strongly encouraged to attend this dedicated session.
Patrick Bell from PRO Inferno Goalie will be on hand to conduct this session.

Season registration forms need to be filled out completely and turned in with the required season deposit of $50 for roster consideration.
Par 2
Jim Engel was the victor last week in the Monroeville Par 2 Golf Courses Golf League's Irrational Tournament.
Engel shot a 6-round total of 100 to claim the highest score in the different format in which a hole-in-one is worth 2 points, par is worth 0, a score of 3 is -1 and 4 or more is -3.
Following Engel were Ken Hastings (92), John Tuite (91), Don Mathews (87), John Bambling (80), Walter Kizzie (66), Don Cherry (64), Matt Vento (54), Mike O'Rourke (50) and Gerald Vick (4).

Hoops camp
Norwin Alliance Church will sponsor two boys basketball camps at Sunset Valley Elementary School this summer.
The first camp will be from Monday to July 17 for boys entering grades six to eight. The second camp is from Aug. 4 to 7 for boys entering grades three to five. Both camps will run from 10 a.m. to noon each day.

NCAA fall ball
NCAA fall baseball registration forms now are available at the Penglyn Concession Stand.
Sign-ups will be held until July 26, Monday through Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fall Ball age groups include Little Sluggers (ages 4, 5, 6), Bantam (7, 8), Juniors (9, 10), Seniors (11, 12), Pony (13, 14) and Colt (15, 16, 17).

Lacrosse camp
In order to help promote boys lacrosse at the middle school level, Franklin Regional will host skill sessions during the summer to introduce boys and girls entering grades one through four to lacrosse.
The sessions will be on Mondays at the high school stadium from 6 to 7 p.m. from July 14 to Aug. 4.
Clinics will be noncontact so that both boys and girls can participate. The cost will be $10. Sticks will be provided.

Golf outing
Franklin Area Midget Football Association will host a golf outing at Meadowink Golf Course on July 25 to raise money for the upcoming season for players ages 6 to 14.
Cost is $90 per person and includes dinner, prizes, golf, etc. Hole sponsorship is $60, and the registration deadline is July 21. Space is limited. There will be a fairway lunch and steak dinner.

Sportsman's clinic
The National Rifle Association will sponsor a Youth SportsFest Camp at the Crowfoot Sportsman's Club in Murrysville on July 19.
The camp will feature training in the safe handling of shotguns, rifles, black powder, and archery equipment under the supervision of experienced instructors.
The camp will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m., and is being held at 4997 Crowfoot Road in Murrysville. All necessary equipment will be provided.

Pony results
FRAA-Morgan improved to 15-2 in Pony League action on July 5 with a 6-5 win over Patberg, Carmody and Ging.
It was the first loss of the season for Patberg, Carmody and Ging in the matchup between the top two teams in the Westmoreland County Pony League.
Leading Morgan to victory was Horgan, who went 3 for 3 at the plate with two singles and a double. He also threw four innings and struck out five batters. Madera earned the win with five strikeouts in three innings.
Adding hits in the win were O'Block, Zimmerman (2), Gregory, Segina and Brown. In the loss, Vento and Vertullo each had home runs for Patberg, Carmody and Ging (16-1).
Junior golf
The Women's Golf Association of Western Pennsylvania will host it's Junior Girls Championship on Aug. 7 at Shadow Lakes Country Club.
The event is open to any junior girl golfer 21 years old and under from Western Pennsylvania.

Huff and puff
The American Respiratory Alliance of Western Pennsylvania will host Camp Huff-n-Puff, a summer camp for children ages 8 to 13 with asthma, from Aug. 7 to 10.
The camp will be held at the Jumonville Camp and Conference Center in Hopwood. Campers will be provided with asthma education classes, crafts, games, hiking, sports, swimming, a Saturday night dance and other activities.

Baseball showcase
The Paramount Scouting Bureau will conduct a professional and college baseball showcase at Freeport Junior High School in Freeport on July 21. It will be an opportunity for exposure to colleges and all professional baseball leagues throughout the world.
