YOUNG VOICES: Unicorns, whales, dogs, tarantulas fill favorite books
Considering that this is perfect weather to stay inside and curl up with a good book, we asked fourth- and fifth- graders at Mother of Sorrows School what their favorite book is. Here's their opinions on must-reads.
- Christina Wolf: "My Secret Unicorn, Dreams Come True" by Linda Chapman. I like this book because it is a happy story and because Shadow and Twilight have to do a jumping contest and Shadow was afraid but, she jumped it because she saw that the log was on fire. I like when Twilight says the magic words she becomes a beautiful unicorn.
- Samantha Liscio: "Here's Hilary" by Suzanne Williams. I like this book because Hilary is messy just like me and she doesn't go to school on time. Hilary is pretty and has two friends. My favorite part is when they play wallball.
- Jimmy Hantz: "Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo. I like this book because I like dogs and I love books with a happy ending. I like it when someone makes a lot of friends.
- Lia Hamm: "Spot the Sporty Puppy" by Jenny Dale. I like this book because it was about a dog and I love dogs. My favorite part was when Spot saved Emma from a car.
- Josh Smith: "Robert and The Attack of the Giant Tarantula" by Barbara Seuling. I like this book because it's very exciting and very funny. There's a lot of action. Robert and Paul want to take care of pets. My favorite part is when the gets tarantula out of his cage and goes under a bed and they are looking for it.
- Alex Hess: "Children of the Lamp." It is my favorite book because these two kids that are brother and sister turn into genies. When they get their wisdom teeth it's a whole new world. You can get this book at your local Borders or Barnes & Noble. I highly recommend this book to kids ages 9 to 14 or even adults! Hope you read it!
- Ben Clarkson: "Johnny Long Legs" by Matt Christopher. I like this book because I like basketball and I like reading sports books. My favorite part is when Johnny and Jim become friends.
- Jemma Reau: "When I Was Little - A Four-Year-Old's Memoir of her Youth" by Jamie Lee Curtis. I like this book. I think she is funny. She is being herself no matter what. This book always reminds me of when I was 4. I like this book because she is not perfect. My favorite part is when she is singing at a store.
- Josh Zaldonis: "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville. I like it because it has action in it. I also like it because it is set at sea. It has ships. And it has a giant whale. My favorite part is when they say "there she blows."
- Michael Murphy: "Geronimo Stilton: Merry Christmas Geronimo" by Edizioni Piemme. I like this book because it's funny and because they use fonts. I also like it because it's Christmas and because the characters are nice. My favorite part is when Geronimo Stilton stumbles down the stairs and breaks his tail.
- Victoria Vasilko: "Don't Tease the Guppies" by Pat Lowery Collins. I like this book because I think it is funny when Tom's brother Jon gets locked in a closet and it is dark and he thinks that there are monsters, but it was just a mop. I like the part when his brother Jon can't read the signs and the sign says don't feed the seals and he throws bubble gum in the tank.
- Kelsey Poholsky: My favorite books are from "A Series of Unfortunate Events." I don't exactly have a favorite book from the series, I like all the them. I have read all eleven books of the series. I also like how Lemony Snicket writes the stories with mysterious characters and unfortunate events. These books are my favorite because they seem to have many genres in one book.
- Alexa Kacin: My favorite book is "Where The Red Fern Grows" because it is so exciting and eventful. There is also a lot of details. I like knowing everything that's going on. I really like it because of the author. He makes everything clear and understandable for kids. He does a great job writing his books.
- Alexandra Beebout: "A Pizza The Size of a Sun" by Jack Prelutsky. I like this book because I love poems. Also it is fun to read and it is very funny. My favorite part about the book is the fact that it rhymes.
- Abigail Arrigo: "Strawberry Mountain" by Birdie L. Etchison. The reason I like this book is because I never knew Cathy would have a baby. I also like the part where Ben goes to old man Kuger's house. He even tries to be friends with this mean dog at Tyler's house, by the way her name is Maggie. My favorite part is when he fogot his sketchbook in old man Kuger's closet.
- Annie Bonfiglio: "Annie Bananie" by Leah Komaiko. I like Annie Bananie because Annie is my name. I like Annie Bananie because she is funny. My dad calls me Annie Bananie sometimes.
