YOUNG VOICES: Who would you choose to be our next president?
Though all of America is caught up in poll-fever, we at the Murrysville Star noticed one demographic that has been sorely overlooked in the daily polls - fourth- and fifth-graders.
And so, to make up for the shortcomings of our brethren in the national media, we went political with this month's class question. Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Mother of Sorrows School in Murrysville shared their thoughts.
Here's who they would pick to serve as the next American president.
- Stephen Young: "Eddie Murphy. I would pick him because he has a good personality. I think Eddie Murphy would be a good president."
- Dalton Hambersky: "My Dad, Allen Hambersky. I think he would be good because he makes smart moves and does not do stupid things. That's who I think should be president."
- Rosalyn Ian: "My cousin, Jonathan Pui. I would like him to be president because he is nice and funny. He is my favorite cousin. He would make a good president. He went to Carnegie Mellon. He is around age 22. I would also like my friend, Jennifer Bracken, to be president. She is in my class. She is 10. She is really nice."
- Scott Boettger: "Myself. I would be good because I would be fair and I would increase pay for most people. I would make more people happy because kids would just have to go to school 100 days a year and you won't have to stay longer. I would give more stuff to the adults to do. Every prison would be so protected that every prisoner won't have a chance to escape. Oh, and I'd increase the Army's funding. I'm good at being in charge."
- Stephanie Pellegrino: "Mia Hamm would be a good president because she wouldn't be afraid to talk about anything. She would know what to do for the United States. She would make good decisions. I think Mia Hamm would be a great president."
- Jenny Bracken: "I would pick myself because I am not that bossy and I am smart. I am nice and I sometimes have good ideas. I would make fair laws."
- Brady Wargofchik.: "My dad. I would pick my dad because he is a good businessman. I also think he would be a good president because he is very used to traveling. When you are president you have to travel all around the United States. He would also be ready for all of the meetings that he had. When you're the president you can't fool around. My dad would take being the president seriously. But the best part about being the president is that he is my dad and I love him a lot."
- Hannah Garlick: "Cait Webster, because she would choose the right things and she is fun. She is very nice and really funny. She wouldn't choose anything bad for our country. She would be serious about the things you should be serious about. She would have some fun if it was appropriate. She is very smart and she works really fast. She would finish her president work and have time to spend with her family and friends. Cait is very loyal. She has a lot of friends because she is so nice. She makes friends fast like she does her work fast. She's good with animals, too. Cait is a girl but she would be a better president than anyone I know."
- Cait Webster: "Cassidy Megan. Because she is very smart. And even though she's a girl, she will make a beautiful president. She will make everyone feel safe and feel that no one will hurt them. She will always be protective of her country."
- Cassidy Megan: "Cait Webster. I think she should become president because she is very intelligent. I think she could get all of her work done and make good speeches. She could be almost as good as Bush. Cait always knows what she is doing. I know that she would love to be president. She would like to have a big desk and people like me to help her out. She is also a very good drawer and very neat. She always makes sure her work gets done."
- George Shaw: "Myself. I would make 5,000 jobs. I would not waste America's money. I would give homes to all poor people. I would cut taxes by 45 percent. I would end the war in Iraq. I'll make a better life for seniors. I will make you stop working at age 45. All kids will go to school and college. My vice president would be my friend Nick (Kukol). I would help all people."
- Nick Kukol: "I pick me. I would do good for the world, give a lot of people jobs. My friend, Patrick, would be my lawyer and handle the money. George (Shaw) would be my vice president. Everybody in my class would get a job. Some of the cities will be blown up. I will put a wall on top of them so only planes can get out. It will be made up of stainless steel, bricks, bombs, cement, Army, Air Force and flowers. We will have a draft so we could have security guards at the door. That is what I would do if I was president."
