Officials believe they can work together on library, history center

Export Mayor Bob Campagna finally is comfortable with the plans for the old Lutheran church on Roosevelt Avenue.

At last week's council meeting, Campagna said he was assured that the proposed library and historical center could share the same building comfortably.

"I have no problems working together," he said.

Campagna had been worried that by putting both the library and historical center in the same building, the library wouldn't be a priority. Last month, he suggested putting it in the American Legion building to separate the two, but council rejected that idea.

Solicitor Wes Long said both facilities could share the same building unless one outgrew the other.

"It's supply and demand," he said.

Last month, officials decided to continue with plans to convert the church into a joint library and historical center. The Brenenborg Brown Group will create plans for the building's renovation.

Councilwoman Melanie Litz said she still is looking for grants to help both facilities. So far, she said there are more possibilities to begin the historical center than there are for the library.

One option to provide help will be the National Trust Forum.

The organization is run by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It provides financial help for organizations and communities that are interested in preserving the history of their town.

Officials unanimously agreed to join the group for $115 a year.

The borough bought the church building several years ago and has been working to renovate it ever since. A $30,000 donation from the family of a former Export resident last year renewed the push to begin work.
